Preperation, Preperation, Preperation and a backup plan :P
Simple rules I go by:
No kids
No pets
Plenty of clothes
Wet wipes
Well supplied
Other than that I'm easy going with not having a set in stone plan and not having a time limit :)
No worries! We've all gone on a tagient :P
Incredible to have to think about having nice smelling food in your pack being a dangerous thing.
I guess if one did turn up, you'd toss the bag towards the bear and just walk away.
How good are bears at swimming?
Can they both climbs trees?
I'm sure I read somewhere about some animals being afraid of hissing as they think it's a snake, this could be just for cats though
Fingers crossed, just the odd graze, splinter or bite.
I think I should add mobile phone to my kit. If what happened in that photo happened to me, forget the plasters, 999/911 it is!
So far I have tweezers, needle, plasters, insect bite cream, wasp sting cream, scissors and, for some reason, eletrical tape.
I'm not exactly prepared for an ER operation :P
I would freak out if I saw a snake like that cross my path!
Tell me, in that situation do I run from the snake or assume the fetal position on top of it? :P
That cat is gorgeous, looks like it could eat a few snakes
OK, another skill from a post @killeroy154 made in another thread (the tree house thread):
Encountering dangerous animals
I realised I would have no chance of surviving where there are dangerous animals as I don't know what you should or shouldn't do (except for the obvious things like don't...
If my knowledge from films and cartoons serves me right: you never run, they'd catch up.
So gorrilas you're suposed to roll into the fetal position and not move, what do you do with bears? Throw a pot of honey is the opposite direction? I don't think I'd be cut out for camping where there is...
What do you make sure to have in your first aid kit when camping?
Any funky bits for sorting out splinters or just a needle?
Antiseptic for grazes or just wash some water over it and whack a plaster on it?
Hopefully no one has ever needed a splint or a cast kit for a broken limb or a sling for...
I have my doubts that Noah built an ark that carried 2 of every animal (but must have forgot to bring the dinosaurs on board).
This reminds me, I started to watch Noah on Netflix last night, my god what a terrible film!
Should have been about a man building a tree house to escape the flood...
Tent pods seem limited in the size they can get to.
I like the look of the traditional Robinson Crusoe, flat plank flooring, ropes but without the pirates.
I suppose a more permanent one would be based on stilts (like your suggestion of an artificial tree) but I would have to have it among...
I supposed to awkward part is establishing a camp that is ok to be set up where it is - either with permissions of the land owner or your own land.
@SashaS what was the lifetime of those camps? I'd imagine the growth of the tree could cause some issues for the more complex setups
Anyone ever tried staying in a tree house?
Obviously it's not much of a temporary setup, but some holiday companies do offer tree house accomodation.
I love the idea of being up in the trees :)
One evening my partner and I were having a walk around and we spotted a few random areas of pressed down/flattened grass.
She was adamant that a deer or something had caused it but I wasn't so sure.
Later that evening a deer comes right near to where we're based as if to show me that she was...
How many old traditional skills do you know how to perform?
They almost touch on survivalist, but useful for campers to know too:
Tracking
Starting a fire with no lighter/matches
Using stars for navigation
There are bound to be other skills I've forgotten about!
How long would it take to pitch and strike that camp :O :P
A bit of a side note: my building at work has earth and grass on it's roof, meant to be ideal for insulation and greener for the environment.
It looks really nice too.
@killeroy154 now camping in a cave is a good idea! we have a lot...
Thank you, and thank you for running this forum, I've already learnt some useful things :)
I do feel I have to go up market with my camping kit as some peoples on this forum puts mine to shame!
