Do you ALWAYS wear a life jacket?

Honestly, no I don't, though I should. I am in good shape and can swim well, but still. My children, if they are anywhere near water, always wear life jackets though.

Do you have to worry about wild bears where you live?

Black bear are active on the rural property that we live on. I've also seen them plenty of times hiking. Am I worried about them? Short answer is no. They are generally wary of man and avoid contact with us. Longer answer is they are a big, powerful, and potentially dangerous animal so I am...

Where can I buy infant water floaties?

I think my wife bought our baby water floats at Walmart. She buys most everything baby-related there. And missyify is correct, I'm sure Amazon has them too.

Have you ever hiked in Hungary?

We may be traveling to Europe soon. Germany to be specific. I have a colleague and friend who is Hungarian and he's talked a bit about his native country. I am curious if anyone here has hiked in Hungary and, if so, could recommend any areas, hikes, or other tips. Thank you. :)

    Water Filtration System?

For large scale water purification, we went with a Big Berkey system. It is not, however, portable. For that, we've gone with the LifeStraw and various handheld filtration bottles. The latter works better in our experience.

    Best brand of fishing poles?

To be honest, I have not bought one in adulthood. My wife's grandfather has made us several over the years. He no longer does so because he is in advanced age and is partially blind, but the poles he's made are real works of art.

Do you take your camera along camping?

I do carry camera most every time I go hiking and camping. I never really got into the smart phone thing (though my next mobile phone will be one), but I've found a mid-cost, decent quality digital camera is great for taking a snap shot of something beautiful or unusual. I can also stroll down...

Introducing youth to camping/hiking and related ...

This is sort of a broad question. How have you introduced young people to the joys of hiking and camping? Any tips for age appropriate activities? Any pitfalls to avoid? Thank you for sharing. :)

    Metal Detecting

I can't say that I ever have, though I could see how it might be interesting. Granted, most of the things found probably aren't going to be too spectacular, but, still, the mystery of looking could be fun. Anyone who does so find anything particularly noteworthy?

    Man Dies From Rattlesnake Bite

Poor fellow. It is fairly uncommon for an adult to die from a rattle snake bite these days. Still, if you hike in areas with these snakes, and I do, it is a good idea to wear appropriate footwear and be aware of their habits. Most of the bites I am aware of in this area were as a result of...

Do you take your camera along camping?

Absolutely, 100% of the time, I take along a camera. I'm no professional photographer, but there are pictures that just have to be taken. Alas, my 2012-vintage Canon finally died last week, but I have a replacement on the way from Amazon.

    Camping Nude

Honestly, I can't say I've ever really done it, beyond "skinny dipping" at remote swimming holes on blisteringly hot days in my youth. That said, I am a very open minded person and have to say I'm a bit intrigued by the notion. There are some very real things that would make nude camping or...

    Any hiking/camping plans?

Well, here in the Pacific Northwest, the winter has been bloody awful. Fortunately, spring appears to be coming at last. I'm planning on going on some hikes in the very near future and I thought I'd toss this out for discussion: do you have any plans in the near future to hike and/or camp...

    The Ideal Weapon

Whilst hiking, I've, at times, carried a small "kit gun" in the form of a revolver. It is chambered for the .38 Special/.357 Magnum cartridge. It has the ability to shoot standard .38-caliber "ball" loads, snakeshot, and full-house .357 Magnum cartridges. The possession and carrying of said...

What are your favorite wild edibles?

It would be difficult to narrow it down to one. Assuming you don't mean from hunting or fishing, both of which I have done, I'd go with blackberries. They are abundant and delicious in these parts. I've eaten them raw and in various dishes over the years. :)
