Who is going to be 71
on August 9th?

[NO...IT IS NOT ME!]

I know... I know... it is only the end of May,
but I couldn't wait to poll Camping Babblers
and tease you a bit on this one.

So...who's birthday is it?

What...you want a clue?
OKAY

Born on August 9th, 1944 he became internationally known
for his work in forestry. Though long past retirement age

he continues to be a leader in forest care and preservation.

Well gosh, this is easy. He's my hero!

Smokey Bear was born on August 9, 1944, when the U.S. Forest Service and the Ad Council agreed that a fictional bear named Smokey would be the symbol for their joint effort to promote forest fire prevention.

Back when I was a little kid in Idaho, we used to see the Smokey the Bear signs along the road, and his picture. Sometimes, they put a message right on the highway and it said "Don't be a Guberif, prevent forest fires ! .
Does anyone else besides me remember seeing these signs on the road, and do you remember what a "Guberif" is ? ?

Guberif is Firebug spelled backwards, Dancer ! You should have had a clue for that one with Smokey always saying "don't be a firebug". I remember sounding out the strange word written on the highway and asking my mother what in the world a "Guberif" was.
Maybe we "Idahoans" just have our own unique sense of humor. I don't remember seeing it any where but in Idaho.

I was probably driving to fast. We had a camp newsletter - it took me a few copies to realize that CAMP "FUTTS" meant "Stuff" - sometimes I can be a bit slow.

I don't know if the highways still say "Don't be a Guberif" any more; but we do definitely still have Smokey the Bear signs yet. Here is one my oldest son took while out on his morning walk this weekend.
