    Whаt is еssеntiаl саmping gеаr?

You can chance it by using the carton they came in, you can purchase plastic egg cartons or if you like scrambled eggs, crack them into a plastic water bottle at home. (I own the plastic egg carton, I have used the water bottle trick for French Toast, pancake batter and I needed heavy cream for...

Whаt is thе bеst slееping bаg fоr fаst pасking?

Down filled sleeping bags are lighter and compress smaller than synthetic. Synthetic still insulates when wet (barely!!), dries quicker, requires a little less care and should be a little less expensive. I sweat, a lot, so I need a synthetic. Girlfriend uses down filled. We live in an...

    Hiking Аpps

Agreed! The green space in my city is about 22 times larger than Central Park in New York. I want to say it's something like 88 KM of continuous trails. I use Canada Topo Maps Pro (there is a US version too) for all my offline topographic maps, has some really good map layers and depicts...

What do you encounter when camping?

The Rockies, man. Has all the big bittie animals. I will admit, to this day I am still terrified of Mountain Lions. One almost got me about 25 years ago (maybe less?) but my dog intervened right when the cat made it's move. Also, that same day about 50 KM away a child on horseback was attacked...

What knife do you live by?

Just a stone, a very large one. I "borrowed" it from work because I was briefly interested in making my own blades. (Practice sharpening on your cheapest, crappiest kitchen knife) I'd love to see a photo, Damascus steel patterns are awe inspiring :)

    Old traditional skills

I'll try to answer using a Likert scale and add without crossing into survival. I'd like to add map reading (both with and without a compass) / terrain association but those skills seem to be a lost art now that everyone has GPS and can load "offline" maps to their cell phone. I'm sure Northern...

What do you encounter when camping?

Mule deer, moose, big horned sheep, bears (black, brown and grizzly), beavers, red fox, coyote, elk, wolverine, some birds of prey and various rodents. I've seen tracks and scat from mountain lions, Canada Lynx, wolves and territorial markings from an alpha grey wolf but haven't encountered...

What knife do you live by?

I got it at Cabela's, little pricey but it's held up to my abuse. One thing to be aware of is the stag antler handle can be a little under or a little over sized to the profile of the tang so definitely look to see if the handle and tang is flush, or close enough you won't feel it.

    Hobbit hole...

Not to slam your idea but this type of shelter is for desert survival because you don't have to worry about rain entering and the cooler ground prevents your brain from melting in the sun. Either way it's not for me, I dislike bugs and small critters. Though it does have a function in the woods...

Do you take a grill when you go camping?

Oh yea. Spread out the coals, place a few rocks or pieces of wood so the basket sits above the hot coals and flip it over when ready to cook the other side. Takes 2 seconds to flip vs. eating smoke, rushing to flip your food because you're burning your hand and ultimately drop some food in the...

Do you take a grill when you go camping?

Preheat the basket before you place the food in it and try to get that quick sear. (Nearly all raw proteins will stick to metal if the metal isn't Teflon/ceramic coated, it's a food science thing and why most recipes call for heating oil or pre-heat your oven to 500*F to "quickly sear" your...

Post your best nature/scenery photos here

Rarely do I ever keep what I catch, most fish large enough to keep are the less "'tasty" species and I don't have a favourite fish meal anymore as you can no longer keep Rainbow Trout in my zone. Almost 500 feet above the base of a waterfall.

Post your best nature/scenery photos here

In the Rockies out running a storm but we had to stop to get this picture. This waterfall you can walk behind, was pretty dangerous. My stomping grounds.

    When you go fishing

I fish because I am a lover a nature and exploring. I only have one friend that camps and fishes so I' usually solo. Only stream fish (always release), it's the excuse to "check out the next bend!", "maybe there's a better fishing hole down there!" so I guess I love the activity as I don't have...

Do you take a grill when you go camping?

I never thought of using a disposable BBQ.. Interesting. My go to items consist of; Cast iron skillet(s) and/or Dutch oven. Heavy duty foil. Jetboil with a small titanium pot (for pasta, rice, coffee, sauces (cheese sauce!), etc.). Then my optional items, depending on the meal plan(s); Cast...

Do you eat more or less than usual when you're camping?

I eat more, far more. My BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) is 1500, based on the Harris Benedict Formula to maintain my body weight I need 2325 calories. I figure my easy 3 hour fishing trek with a light load I can burn 1300+ calories and I go at least twice a day (once at dawn and once at dusk). So...

    All About Camp Fires

I enjoy the Swedish Log Fire on the first day. After a 5 hour drive to the mountains and hauling gear 100 meters from the car to the camp ground my girlfriend and I are already hungry and tired so I bring one log from home, ready to go. Using this fire technique drastically reduces the time and...
