I feel very safe where I live and to most of the places I have traveled so I have not felt much need for a weapon. But there is some areas where I know that is not the case and I can completely understand the need. More related to camping, and you are fearing dangerous wild animals then I think...

I think for winter camping you need to be a lot more serious because you need to really have the right equipment compared to summer camping where you can often get by with just the essentials. I am not a big fan of the idea of winter camping but I would like to give it a try once someday.

I have a swiss army knife but I find myself using my folding knife with just the knife and no extras a lot more because it is sturdier and I don't really use the other functions that most swiss army knives have. I'd probably just bring a lighter if I needed that. Do you use the other gadgets...

I just use a set of old ski poles (usually they can be found quite cheaply used) and my snowshoes have nylon straps with a buckle. How deep is the snow you plan on trekking through?
