Canoe seat upgrade

Not much to do with camping, but I mentioned to Northern Dancer that I liked his curved canoe seat

so I started to make an upgrade style, like his. for my solo canoe

this is the standard flat seat that came with it.

I had some ash wood from a tree that died in my neighbor's yard, it's a shame that all the ash trees are dieing. I started by splitting the log

I believe it is black ash, identifiable by the dark center. After splitting part from log it bowed to a natural curve. I don't want to have to make a steamer, so I hope I can work with the curve, somewhat. Little extra trimming

I've never had to work with a natural curve like this, so excuse the pun, it is a real learning curve for me

cleaned up and took a break.

Thank you Bulldoginajeepwithacolt. I figured if I posted it I would have to finish, and not put it aside for long period of time. I saw someone on TV work wood by hand, and I thought I would give it shot. I've got a couple of months to kill till it cools enough for camping. I am thinking about using cane for the seat part, but I've never done that either.

Worked on it some today. Chopped the mortise and cut the tenons

Sat on it to test it for breakage[emoji106] Got it glued and clamped

Maybe Sunday afternoon I can sand and polyurethane it. What should I cover it with? I thought about cane, but open for ideas.

Got the frame ready, but I'm stuck.

it's 13 x 18 inches, yeh I got big behind. I want to do a plastic cane weave mat

but I'm to intimidated with routering the groove around. The slight bow in the seat frame makes it a little difficult, and I am not very good with a router. Unh

Finished my router work

not a perfect job, but I could clean it nicely. Thought I would set it up and sit on it to make sure it was sturdy..... ooh @$€^/ naw that's OK. Not going to get upset.

I didn't anticipate the knot being a weak spot. I'm learning. I'll start over and do a better job.

Thank you bulldoginajeepwithacolt, yeh I really do need to learn to use a router. I seriously thought about just cutting groove with knife and wood chisel. Maybe I start again in couple weeks, and do better.

made myself a beater hammer out of piece of 4x4. Trim it to rough size

I'll do better this time. Maybe have it done in a couple of weeks.

Ha... yep a few months later and I am trying to revive my seat plans. I had the rails and stiles taped together and set aside. Good time of year to start it back up. Got to cut my mortise,s and I guess order a roll of plastic cane. My book shows how to weave it. I was going to order the weaved mat, but decided against it.

This is one of my favorite threads on the site, I have always reading these types of things when I come across them on the internet. Seeing what talented craftspeople can do when they put some serious effort into something. When I was really into custom computers people would do the same thing logging their work as people commented to cheer them on. I am eagerly awaiting the next update @killeroy154

I love how even the blocks of wood you cut and shaped yourself, no pre-bought 2x4s here!

Thank you for the encouragement @campforums. I meant to get back to work on it sooner, but time slips away. I chopped a little on a couple of mortise, and messed one up a bit, so I thought I would take a break and peel some taters, and play camping cooking with some walleye, wow was that great! I'll post when I make progress.

Ready to order the cane. Rough sanded and smoothed edges with a wood rasp. Brought up stairs and sat at table to plot holes for caning. Retreated to basement with fudge, and marked spots with punch for drilling. Drilled, finish sanding and put natural stain on it. I'll polyurethane it tomorrow and order the cane. Next trial is weaving it... ooh that should be fun. Merry Christmas to me.

The roll of cane, binder and pegs came in mail today. It is plastic because real cane would sag when wet. Hard to believe that's a 1,000 foot roll. Well maybe next week cause I started a small cabinet project (the wooden thing my seat is leaning on) I'm going to finish first.

Getting there a little at a time. I spent a couple of hours on it while watching a movie with Audry Hepburn and Peter O'Tool. She showed a little "thigh" in that one, scandalous. I can't believe they showed stuff like that in the 60's. Bah ha ha. Any how I worked on weaving my artificial cane until I had to get ready for work.

A couple more hours this afternoon redoing what I messed up the other day. While weaving I messed up a couple of places where I was supposed to go under over under over, and I did an under over over under mistake. Well, anyhow, it takes a little concentration. Then I got held up by some tempting ice cream.

An hour here and there working on it. I've slowed down how fast I was weaving it because it really is more tedious and time consuming to redo a mistake. "One stitch at a time saves nine" Right? I'm not doing much else since it's cold and wet outside. I started my diagonal weave. When I finish going across with this direction, I will cross it again going the other way, and then all I have left is the binder for the border.
