We drove into the Smokey mtns last week while we were up that way. There was a bad fire there last month that killed 14 people and destroyed several homes. We have had a drought since the summer, so the conditions were great for this type of disaster.
Some of the burn can be seen in this picture looking toward mount leconte. We drove to the top of the mtns and turned around. The Appalachian trail crosses here
The wind blew so fierce one evening that some animals couldn't escape. Tall pine trees were reported to be completely engulfed in flames because it has been so dry. Normally when we have a wild fire the underbrush is mostly what gets destroyed
Most areas are to impenetrable for fire fighting crews.
It was sad to see some of this burned. It will take several years to come back. I plan on hanging around till I am in my 90's to check on mother nature's progress.
