I've never had the pleasure of seeing one on my camping trips but for some reason my brother did all the time. Back then I was jealous. But I don't really care now.
Most native such as myself have a deep respect for these and other native species of Hawaii.
Just a fair warning to all that try to approach one thinking it's cool and all, be careful of the natives. Some take that seriously and they will put a beating on tourist that think its funny to approach one. I'm serious. No joke.
