Do you ALWAYS wear a life jacket?

That is actually looking very good @killeroy154, and the fact that it's inflatable makes that doesn't occupy a lot of space when we don't need it. Seems good quality, so I am guessing it doesn't come cheap?

    When there is a storm

Yeah, I was not, I am fully aware of that. I went with a trip with my cousin, his girlfriend and another friend, we were about 17 or 18 years old, and my sleeping bag was awful, so in the winter in the mountains I almost froze. More, water was getting inside the tent, so it was a really good...

    Camping in the Winter

I was camping in the Winter, in the highest mountain in Portugal, Serra da Estrela. Sure, it's not too high, about 2 km high, and we were about 1 mile high. So it was crazy because I was unprepared, I was freezing, it was raining, and the next day I took the train back home. It was a terrible...

    Sleeping Bag or Cot?

That's another thing, we need to be comfortable, even more if we are camping from a certain age on. Yeah, so good point here, as camping can go far beyond young age, and there are solutions for anyone that loves camping and just wants to keep on going. Nothing like doing what we love. :)

    Happy camper

Yeah, putting them in touch with nature, teach them to do the fire, to cook there, to prepare stuff with woods, survivalist stuff, or just radical sports haha. Either cases, bringing them along and not engaging them in activities is just a bad idea.

    When there is a storm

Well, if it's a typhoon we are talking about, I'd go to the safest location, as these can be life threatening. Fortunately, I've never experienced nothing similar. I faced heavy rains though, and as I was not properly prepared, the whole trip became a nightmare and we have to cut it short as no...

    Wearing shorts or pants?

Pants is safer for two many reasons that you have already mentioned. One, because of insects. Nothing worse than getting bitten by them and getting pains for days. Second, plants that can hurt us. Pants might make us feel hot, but they do protect us against plants, so they are the best solution...

    Happy camper

You have a good point there, it all depends on the activities we propose to them. If we are talking about canoeing, kayaks or other activities more "radical", that just might engage them to continue outdoors activities, and that is far better than many other activities out there.

Do you ALWAYS wear a life jacket?

Yeah, if we think of it, it's just some minutes to put a life jacked on and it can save our life. It totally changed my perspective about it, as even if we consider ourselves good swimmers, we don't know what can happen, so we are better off wearing one.

    Sleeping Bag or Cot?

I think that usually a sleeping bag works just fine, but having a self inflating mattress is taking things to a different level of comfort. Many times the ground is just too irregular for us to sleep properly, so we do need something to isolate us from the cold and to make us more comfortable...

Do you ALWAYS wear a life jacket?

If it's something that won't take long and on shallow waters, I don't think it's necessary, but if it's an activity that will take long and it's on deep waters I think we should wear one, for our own safety. Sadly some years ago, a friend of mine drowned on a lake because he was fishing without...

    Happy camper

Thanks for the welcome. :) My kids are still small, just 7 and 9, so they don't get bored, quite the opposite, they feel all the excitement of sleeping in a tent, making a fire and exploring the wild. My younger kid is a little scared of the dark at this time, so he's not the biggest explorer...

Would you go camping on a "haunted" forest?

So that's surprising that being a scout you get to hit birds with a slingshot? :o That's really against scouts ideology as they try to blend with nature, not hurt animals. I am not sure how you lost your shoe though? Most of the times I think those horror stories are just to scare the kids and...

Would you go camping on a "haunted" forest?

This is something I have never done and certainly would never do as for me camping is to have fun and to be in the nature, but without scary stuff. I do know people that do that and in places where it's claimed to be done some strange rituals, but I prefer to pass on that as these days when I...

    Hiking at Night

Night hiking is dangerous for a number of reasons, most of them you have listed them and debated them above. Animals can be a situation too, even if I have never had such an issue. The only time I did night hiking was from Azeitão to Serra da Arrábida (maybe 10 miles by night), it's an event...

    Camping in Portugal

Hi guys, so I am from Portugal and I've camped a lot, so any questions or doubts do ask away! One of my most memorable camping trips was when I carried my tent and my backpack in my bike for close to 120Kms (painful yes - Lisboa - Tomar) and arrived to a camping site called Pelinos and the...

Is RV camping popular in Europe?

Yeah, sorry about the late answer :D, but I can confirm it's pretty popular, at least in Portugal and we do have stunning places that you can visit and camp. As we have a huge coastline you can imagine, we have quite a few paradise locations we want to camp there forever. There are places where...
