Gosh! Sorry, I forgot all about your protective loyal dog. But of course I would not wish to offend his sense of honor, for he is a loving companion and not at all mean. I was wondering do the lakes & rivers, in Canada, warm up in the summer? Here in Pennsylvania, at least in the area I live in a lot of the lakes and streams are spring fed and thus the water stays quite cold through out the summer months. I saw a post in another thread, asking why anyone would swim in cold water and it made me smile as in my area that is the only choice unless the rivers water depth lowers do to lack of rain. It is freezing at first and then a body adapts to the cold water.

It depends of course where you are in Canada. In this part of Ontario and certainly where I trip and camp the lake and rivers warm up just fine. Swimming is a must including all the other summer water activities. I'm not far from the great lakes - Ontario and Erie and they warm up just fine for the swimmers.

I guess I should have said man-made lakes and areas where the run-off comes from cold water springs and mountain run-off. Bigger lakes the upper layer warms well for swimming. I have not been swimming or wading since I returned from Florida. Not sure if I could stand colder temp's without getting severe cramps.

I can appreciate that. I've never been in a hurricane like situation and I don't think I really want to be. Though...a few weeks ago when I was out the winds were howling around me like wolves of the wilderness. I sort of like our climate - spring, summer, winter and fall and each one a pronounced season. I'm sure I could adjust to a warmer climate...but then again...I like the snow too.

I actually missed snow when I was in Fl. Missed the changing of the seasons as well. It was like something big was missing and could not be replaced. Hot Christmas Day's are a bit hard to get used to as well, but that is a past memory now that I am home again.

Oh yes...the east coast [Newfoundland, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia] would be my favourites. Like your country we are blessed with just about every terrain imagenable.

But yeah the lakes get quite nice in southern Ontario by around early July and usually stay warm until the beginning of September. Also the deeper lakes/bodies of water are usually quite a bit cooler than the smaller, shallower ones. Also water is quite good at retaining heat so that's why they take a month or so to get hot after the weather has changed and about a month or so to cool off at the end of summer.

Sort of....at least I know when and where I'm going to set camp and where the fire pit is located. I will not forget the marshmallows either. And smores? Let's use the chocolate coated cookies to take them off the sticks. I can taste it all now.

So are you off camping or just hiding out at home. Have not seen you on site lately. Today we did major clean-up work in my mom's yard, took down a huge tall tree and several smaller ones. It was quite a job for our expert tree cutter. He hauled the biggest tree away on a log truck and the rest will get chipped up and disposed of. I stayed out of the way and just watched them work. It is amazing how they learn to cut a tree and get it down right where they want them. And now off to new adventures and soon to bed.

Hi there - I'm still here - complaining about the weather as much as anyone else.

I watched our tree guys too...fast, efficient, oozing with skill and technique. Did I mention expensive? BUT...they did a super job and all the debris is cleaned up and we can now get to managing the lawns. Our property is larger in terms of most city lots and the winter damage was extensive.

There is nothing worse than waiting....everything that can possibly thought of in terms of planning for the camping/canoeing season has been done. Every list has been re-examined, every piece of equipment doubled-checked, anything that needed to be replaced is complete. The menu is organized. The canoe is waxed. The dog has all his shots updated. Yada yada, yada.

We wait with baited breath for the coming of the Summer Solstice...

Now I have my tent and will be attempting to set it up and taking it down with some help, but must find a way to be able to get out in the woods this summer. Now...remember....you peg the tent down first before putting it up. I think that I mentioned the time that I tried putting up a tent without pegging it properly - well, things didn't go right. I don't think I'll be doing that again soon.

It is so so smart to set it up first and check it all out, examine the nooks and corners etc.

It's exciting isn't it.
