The strid is near my home town, we would often go to Bolton Abbey as kids but were only allowed in the calmer water up/ down stream.
As shown in that kayaking video, going in the water doesn't mean you die! But at the narrowest point (which many people have jumped over- some fat less successfully) anyone who has fallen in hasn't come out of the water alive.
As said above the huge power of a river rushing through a 2 meter wide gap forces the water down into its maze of tunnels. The force is far too great for even the strongest swimmer!
Horrible stories in this area, the worst possibly being the newly weds who drowned at this spot the day after their wedding.
