    Margarette Falls, Cherokee National Park.

Since it cooled off a little yesterday, we took a short hike to Margarette Falls. It was maybe 1.5 miles to the falls from the parking lot. It was plenty rocky and rooted and followed a small stream most of the way. The first 1/2 mile looked to be an old road bed, so it was a pleasant stroll for...

Whew Boy It Sure Is Hot!!

Are most people camping? Or are you just holding in the air conditioning waiting for cooler weather? Me personally it's just to hot in these parts for my liking. Most times this time of year I don't have the urge for camping. I do look at past fall pictures, and that does lift my spirits. The...

    Grandfather Mtn North Carolina

Got up early and started off for Grandfather Mtn. First we walked around the mile high bridge before starting the hike to McCrea Peak. I hate to admit that it wasn't quite a mile, but it was challenging. Pictures 2 thru 6 is taken at the bridge. Pic 6 shows the parking lot and where the trail...

    Papa got new shoes

The hiking shoes I purchased last year have been a little snug. They appeared to fit good when I purchased them, and they have served me well. The couple of past times hiking this spring they have become a little uncomfortable, maybe the fur on my feet has thickened or something, so I began...

    1st Time for New Seats

We took the canoe out this morning to try out the new seats, and I needed the extra paddle power to get up stream to check out a possible camping spot. This part of the local river is wide, shallow and swift, and I knew she was up to the challenge. We paddled up stream and followed along on the...

    Good trip.

Just got back from a few days of camping on Tellico lake. Picked up a buddy after he got off from work 11pm Wednesday night. We arrived at the lake where we put the boat in to go to our camping spot, 1:30 in the morning, where my brother waited. It was dark and calling for rain, but we were...

    Never to much.

Getting my stuff ready for short 4 days of camping and fishing. Taking 2 sleeping bags, one for a buddy and one incase I need it. The weather is a little iffy. We will be transporting equipment by boat, so there is no need to scrimp on luxuries. It's a change for me because I always pack...

Warm one day Snow the next.

80° Saturday and we went bicycle riding. The dogwood trees, orchids and other spring flowers are blooming. There was even a turtle enjoying the warm sun shine. Now it is 32° and snowing. Hard to get a good picture of the snow blowing by the dogwood tree, but it's there.

    What does the name mean?

You ever wonder how your state park or favorite lake, river or waterway got its name? Several in this part of Tennessee are given Cherokee Indian names, of course most all of this area belonged to the native people of the Cherokees. I live near a lake named after the once great nations of native...

    Morning drift fishing

Grabbed a couple of hours of sleep after work yesterday morning, got up to sun shine and headed for the river. The banks were a little steep to get into the canoe safely, so I searched the near by feeder creek. I found this one spot where I slid the canoe under the fence to the water. It was a...

Canoe ain't only thing on my mind.

Getting my privy set-up. I just got the privy tent, and I think it was a good deal. Packs small and easy to put up, and plenty of room. Now all I need to do is nail down a time in April. My wife asked me "how much camping stuff do you need?" I replied "all of it".

    A Meaning of an Obsession

I lie here in bed looking at my recent Paddlers Buyers Guide thinking to myself why am I so wrapped up in love of water and camping, and the pursuit of buying things for this passion that I never feel like I have enough time for. Then I ran across something written by Scott MacGregor of Paddling...

    Auld Lang Syne

2017 was an interesting year, to say the least. I actually had a couple of camping trips that I didn't have to wear my rain gear most of the time, so what an improvement over 2016. Camped on a great trout stream in the mountains, of course the trout didn't cooperate very well. Spent 4 days with...

    I Like Lights!

Got a couple of new toys, I love things that light up. Plus it actually serves as a power supply. Not really anything I would try to attach to my hat, but it doesn't weigh much. I set my glasses pouch next to it for a size comparison. No brand name anywhere. The box says work light. Oh and they...
